4 · Art and Narrative Imagination

Before the invention of writing, drawn images were used to communicate ideas and tell stories about human experiences. Art and narration are natural partners. Pictures can tell stories tacitly, while verbally or textually conveyed stories benefit from the aid of visual illustrations. Images stimulate imagination and may bring ideas to visual reality. In this section, lessons are presented that draw upon, relate, or support communication of real or imagined stories.

FEATURED ARTIST: JAMES HUNTLEY

As an undergraduate student at Indiana University, James Huntley double-majored in fine art and journalism. This combination supported an understanding of images and text as interactive elements of storytelling. After graduation he applied his skills as a computer graphic illustrator and journalist for a news service and Fortune 500 company before leaving the United States to live for six years in Asia. While studying Chinese painting in Taiwan, he developed a love for teaching, and eventually returned to the United States to work as an artist-educator.

James Huntley’s artworks are inspired by experiences of travel throughout the world. His work in traditional, digital, and mixed media is influenced by the places he has seen and people he has met along the way. “My ideas are taken from imagination, memories, and observation of journeys both in the mind and the world,” he states. Many of his works also are dominated by fado, a tacit sense of longing more commonly articulated through a Portuguese form of music that is characterized by distinctively bittersweet tunes and lyrics about life among ordinary folk.
